2019 SCHOOL CAMP

In our School Camp this year, we went to Whangarei with the year 5, 6, and 7s. We went to Top 10 Holiday Park.

We went to a lot of cool places. From a Trampoline Park, to the Poor Knights Marine Reserve.
It was a lot of fun and I would miss this opportunity when I go to College.

My Holiday

AWESOME:
One thing I thought was AWESOME in my holiday was when I went to Flip Out Trampoline Park. This was awesome because I loved going on the trampolines. Me and my friend were on the trampolines for a couple hours. We played dodge ball and did tricks into the air mat.

SCARY:
One thing I thought was SCARY in my holiday was that I had my braces tightened. I was scared because when I first got braces, it hurt a lot and I could not eat anything solid for 2 weeks. Online it said that tightening braces can also give some ‘discomfort’ (PAIN) to the teeth. But luckily when it was done and dusted, the pain was substantially less than the first time.

RELAXING:
One thing I thought was RELAXING in my holiday was chilling with my friend in Whangarei. I stayed at his place for 4 days, and he stayed at mine for 4 days also. We went to the movies, got some snacks in town and played Pokemon Go.
To me, this was relaxing.

Can Music help you Think?

By Andrew Kim

There is no direct answer to if music can help you concentrate and think. Different studies have different answers to this question. But they mostly point to music being helpful towards studying.

For example, scientists say that babies can respond to music before they are even born. Some even believe that classical music can make the brains of children grow and makes them smarter.

Some have found that music can help lower blood pressure and even help reduce pain.

If you do want to listen to music while studying, classical music can be good, as it calms your nerves which helps you focus. Listening to loud, crazy music can actually stop you from concentrating as your mind can focus on the music instead of focusing on the subject.

Who Invented the Microwave?

Who Invented the Microwave?
By Andrew Kim

The microwave’s contribution to the cooking industry has been massive, and spawned a whole new generation of “fast food”. Things like noodles, popcorn, rice; anything that needs heating to be cooked was made available to the people who may not have the time, money or effort to cook the more traditional and accepted way.

Ever had any leftovers? Chicken, Spaghetti, Pizza… There are many foods that you need to go through a little bit of trouble to heat up. Unless if have the power of the MICROWAVE! Eating leftovers was never so easy!

Compared to how much we use this wonderful invention, it is quite surprising that most people do not know how the microwave works and how it was invented.

So who did invent the microwave? Well, inventing this was actually a complete accident! The person who did was called Percy Spencer. He worked for a company called Raytheon, and back in World War II, they were developing microwave radar transmitters.

In 1945, on one casual day, Spencer found out that a candy bar that was in his pocket was starting to melt. The microwaves from the radars have been heating up his candy bar.

After a bit of playing around and researching, he figured out that the microwaves may have been gathering up to heat food. Spencer made the very first oven using microwave technology.

But how does the microwave oven work?
Microwaves are absorbed by water, fats, and sugars and it is converted to heat. And since the microwave only needs to heat the food itself and not the things around it, it uses up a lot less energy than traditional ovens.

When the microwave first came out, almost six feet tall (183cm) and weighed about 750 pounds. (340 kgs) It was also $5,000, which would be equal to over $52,000 today.

So the next time you heat up something in the microwave, you’ll know a little piece of the history behind this amazing invention.

What causes Shooting Stars?

By Andrew Kim

People believe that if you make a wish after seeing a shooting star, it will come true. Shooting stars are fascinating, but it's not really a wish casting magical thing.

Stars and Planets are things we think about when we think “Space”. They are also the easiest things to see in the night sky. But they aren't the only things moving around in space.

There are rocks moving around too. These rocks can be as tiny as particles of dust, and some are bigger than boulders. These rocks are actually what shooting stars are. They may seem to glow and twinkle like stars, but it’s actually them going through the Earth's atmosphere and burning up.

Should restaurants be allowed to sell genetically modified chicken under the name chicken?
By Andrew Kim

Imagine eating some chicken fettuccine at a restaurant only to find that the meat was actually made from corn and soy products. What would you do? Would you file a complaint or would you just keep on eating the meal that you found delicious right before you found out the truth?

Genetically modifying chicken is a common practice used by many restaurants and food chains around the world. It is used to save costs.

I myself think that if you are using genetically modified chicken you should disclaim it. Sure, you would lose interest at first, but I think people should come to know that genetically modified things aren’t a super crazy idea and begin to try the chicken again. Plus it is better for the ecosystem that we use plants instead of animals since plants can be mass produced.

Genetically modified chicken is a great option for vegetarians and vegans. Since no animal has died to make the chicken, they can enjoy the great taste of chicken can offer without the worry of any killing being involved.

Genetically modified chicken is also can be used to save the world’s supply of chickens. As of right now, we do not have a method to make eggs artificially. We need to save our chickens as global egg consumption rises annually.
(Source: Statista.com http://bit.ly/globaleggconsumption)

Should restaurants be allowed to sell genetically modified chicken under the name chicken? No. But I think that genetically modifying is a good idea that we should embrace for the future. Some people may never be comfortable with replacing chicken with “supposedly” different taste. But I think that we could really make a difference in the future with the newly found methods that we couldn’t have access to before.
